VLC 2.0 for Android out now

The VLC media player might well be one of the most efficient and versatile options now available. Its Android version had always trailed the desktop software by a little ways, but that seems to no longer be the case with this new version 2.0 for smartphones. It finally includes features users have been requesting for ages, like streaming over network protocols, automatic subtitle download, playlists for videos, or the option to run in window mode.

Decoding performance

VLC can decode video in software and hardware mode. Hardware decoding often provides better performance but is not supported on all devices. If your device Android version is below 4.3, software decoding may be the only supported option for you.

VLC Media Player 2.5.0 for Android is now out

To talk about VLC Media Player is to talk about a flagship media application and a paradigmatic example of open source development. Born in 1996 as an academic project, it’s evolved and adapted to the times with every new version that’s appeared. The Android app development has followed the same steps, although the updates have sometimes left rather more to be desired. Hence why the rollout of this new version (2.5.0) is cause for celebration, what with the addition of so many new features.

VLC for Android is an app you can use to watch videos from your Android. But, it also does a whole lot more. This versatile app can play a wide variety of formats of video clips as well as audio files. All you need is an Android with at least a ARMv7 CPU to enjoy everything this app has to offer.

This app isn’t too different from the original VLC. It also allows you to play videos and sound files in a ton of different formats. Plus, it makes exploring your media library a seamless experience. Take stock of all the files you have on your smartphone and play them with just the tap of your fingertip.

Likewise, the app comes with tons of tracks for one video, subtitles, screen auto-rotation, screen adjustments, and much more that you can modify with as little as three clicks! VLC for Android is a great tool to play audio and video files, watching movies and much more is simple and easier than usual.

VLC for Android is a reliable audio-visual player. Now you can watch movies in virtually any file right from your Android.

The VLC media player has come a long way from being an MKV player on your PC to VLC for Android smartphones. The best thing about this android video player is that it is totally free. Also, it is an open-source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files and network streaming protocols.

Formats and Cross-Platform Support:

VLC for Android plays most local videos and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), DVD ISOs, like the desktop version of VLC. It also supports disk shares. Using the VLC Player for android you can play video formats such as Mkv, mp4, MOV, Avi, Ogg, FLAC, ts, m2ts, WV, aac, etc. Codecs are available without any further downloading. With VLC media library for both audio and video files, the user can search through folders directly.

All of this is supported by a built-in media library that browses your device folders and collects and sorts all your audio and video files into a single place for easy access and listening. You can use VLC media player for android as an audio player on the go. It has support for multi-track audio and subtitles.

Tweaking the layout for Leanback Library

On Android TV devices, VLC users can see all their video categories at once, rather than aggregating categories as on mobile. To optimize for this browsing feature, the Leanback Library uses extendable fragments to allow developers to easily create rich, animated experiences for each piece of content.

VideoLAN created a custom browsing UI to enable sorting and scrolling with a Floating Action Button and added animations for each scrolling option. The team also created a quick scroll feature similar to their Android Auto app that allows users to quickly browse their video content using first-letter searches, rather than needing to scroll the entire list.

Implementing an entirely new UI for Android TV led to a decent amount of code refactorization—that’s where the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) architecture proposed by Android’s architecture components came in handy. By following these architectural guidelines, the team was able to create a clear separation between UI code and app logic, which simplified the sharing of the app logic code once the new UI was written. Now, the same code powers VLC’s mobile and TV UI.

The team also worked with Livedata transformations to create a map with elements grouped by video information (such as title, date added or video length) starting from the unique list they used on mobile. Because Android TV displays videos in landscape mode, the team split the content into several rows rather than featuring them in a vertical, scrollable list.

Important Note: It is not recommended to use any modified apps / apk found on the Internet. These files can contain viruses / malware and can seriously damage your device and allow third party sites to steal and hack your data.
