Akola: One woman remarried after divorce. Therefore, an incident has taken place in Akola district where the caste panchayat has punished her for spitting. According to an official, the panchayat has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the woman.
After the caste panchayat’s order, the woman showed courage and lodged a complaint with the police. According to police, the incident took place last month. An FIR has been lodged against 10 members of the caste panchayat under the Maharashtra Boycott Protection Act 2016 after a woman living in Jalgaon lodged a complaint.
In Nath Jogi society, second marriage is not acceptable.
The woman lodged a complaint against the caste panchayat at Chopda (Jalgaon). The police then handed over the case to Akola Pinjar Police Station. The incident took place on April 9 at Wadgaon in Akola. She was sentenced by the panchayat for not accepting a second marriage in the Nath Jogi community.
Punishment passed in the absence of the victim
The victim’s first marriage was in 2011. In 2015, she divorced her first husband. In 2019, she got married for the second time. The panchayat summoned the woman’s family and sentenced her. The victim was not present at the time. In this punishment, the members of the panchayat will spit on the banana leaves and the victim should lick it. The victim was also asked to pay Rs 1 lakh to the panchayat.
If the victim fulfills the conditions of the panchayat, she can be reintegrated into the society. Even so, this is a shame for progressive Maharashtra. However, Akola police has registered a case against ten members of the panchayat.
