The Full Form of IAS is Indian Administrative Services (IAS) formerly known as the Imperial Civil Service during the British rule is one of the three arms of All India services along with IPS and IFoS. IAS officers are recruited through the civil services examination which is famous for being one of the toughest competitive exams in the world. How to become an IAS officer?
To become an IAS officer, candidates have to clear Civil Services with top rank in the exam. The Civil Services Exam consists of 3 stage selection process – prelims, mains and personal interview.
IAS Officer Career Profile
The IAS officers handle affairs of the government. At the state and central level, this involves the framing of the policies and its implementation. As IAS full form signifies the career of an IAS officer deals with administration. Members of the Indian Administrative Service hold various administrative posts like District Collector, Heads of Departments, and Head of Public Enterprises at the state level. They can also be posted on deputation to the Central Government to various administrative posts.

IAS being an ‘All India Service’ follows the Cadre system. In this system officers are allotted to state cadres, not necessarily to your home state. So for all practical purposes you belong to that state service but may be deputed elsewhere in the country. However you’ll always be recognized by your allotted state cadre. This system though very useful tends to positively and negatively affect the careers of an IAS officer. The cadre system is allotted on a basis of lottery and only the toppers of each state may get a chance to serve their home state if they have opted for such a preference.
IAS Officer Career Progression
Besides, IAS officers can be appointed in autonomous organizations/sub ordinate organizations/PSUs/UN Organizations/international organizations like World Bank, Asian Development Bank in Various capacities. They also serve as Personal Secretaries to Ministers in Central Government. There is provision for deputation of IAS officers to private organizations also for a fixed tenure. Some of the IAS officers even become governors of states.
IAS Recruitment and Training
Along with the selected Civil Service officers, the trainee IAS officers have to undergo 15 weeks training. Here after they are shifted to the two stages of training before serving the actual service.
In stage I of the training, the officers learn to expand the perfect proficient qualities in managing the huge arrays of tasks which has to be taken up for the first 10 years of service that is for 26 weeks. Then district training for several parts of administrative responsibilities of regional sorts, including location study of assignment for the academy. The duration is of 52 weeks where the officers experiences about the actual execution of the regional administration. The district training aims for the allotment of Cadres for the actual appointment.

Everything about IAS Exam
IAS exam is conducted by the UPSC every year to select suitable candidates for India’s premier civil services. It is conducted in three stages i.e., Prelims, Mains and Personal Interview. Every year, less than 1000 candidates are selected for the overall 24 posts. Let’s dive into the details of the process.
- Preliminary Examination: It consists of 2 papers comprising objective type questions with multiple choice answers. Prelims exam is qualifying in nature and used to select candidates for the mains examination. Marks scored in the prelims exam are not considered for the final list. - Mains Examination: This exam has a total of 9 papers. The marks of only 7 papers are calculated to rank the candidate and the rest 2 are qualifying in nature. Only those candidates who have cleared the prelims exam are eligible to appear for the mains examination. All the papers are descriptive in nature.

- PERSONALITY TEST : This is the final stage of the UPSC selection process. It is conducted by the UPSC board to assess the personality and suitability of the candidates for the civil services. It comprises of 275 marks.
In order to be eligible for the IAS exam, a candidate must have obtained a graduate degree from any recognised university of India and must have attained a minimum age of 21 years. UPSC has a fixed number of attempts for the candidates depending upon the category and age limits. Its details are given below:
